Starry Nights Enjoy a family-friendly starry night stargazing event at Rancho Cañada del Oro Open Space Preserve!
Event Details
THIS ACTIVITY REQUIRES REGISTRATION AND A FREE TICKET
The Open Space Authority is pleased to work with the San Jose Astronomical Association (SJAA) to co-host a community star party at Rancho Cañada del Oro Open Space Preserve. Just 30 minutes south of downtown San José, this preserve features night skies so dark you can see the band of our Milky Way galaxy in the summer!
Telescopes will be provided along with docent astronomers to help you find amazing features in the night sky. Please do not bring your own telescope (binoculars are welcomed, but please no tripods). SJAA official club members will set up their telescopes to help you get the most knowledge and enjoyment out of the truly dark starry night sky.
No flash photography or imaging at this event. Please see http://www.Meetup.com/SJ-astronomy for Astro-Imaging events.
This is a family friendly event! Although younger children are welcome, this activity is best suited for children 5 years and older. Please remember - no smoking, alcohol, or pets allowed at this preserve.
Dress in warm layers (it gets cold at night). If you bring a dim white flashlight, be sure to bring it with, or get it wrapped in red plastic at the sign-in desk (to help preserve everyone's night vision). Please bring water to drink.
Arrive no later than 9:30 p.m., as the gates will be closed then to allow for a better viewing experience for everyone involved. If possible, turn OFF your headlights to enter the parking area. Please sign in at our table when you arrive. There is extra parking up the road in the overflow parking lot, and a trail will be marked with lights to lead you back to the viewing area.
Rain, heavy clouds or thick smoke cancels. PLEASE PRINT YOUR TICKET and show it to our greeters at the front gate to be admitted to the event.
